一名住在墨爾本北郊的居民說：「這足以將我從睡夢中吵醒。一聲爆炸般的巨響、低沉的隆隆聲、窗戶嘎吱作響，接著恢復寂靜。這一切很快就結束了。」

墨爾本以東180公里的Woods Point當年發生規模5.9地震，遠至700公里外的地區都能感受震動，墨爾本市中心有磚牆倒塌，全市共有46座建築物受損。
